2024 Baekje world heritage
The 2024 World Heritage Festival aims to widely promote the value and significance of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
From September 27 to October 17, 2024, the "2024 World Heritage Festival - Baekje Historic Areas" will be held in Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan, part of the Baekje Historic Areas.
The 2024 World Heritage Festival - Baekje Historic Areas is co-hosted by the Korea Heritage Service, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Jeonbuk State, Gongju City, Buyeo County, and Iksan City, and organized by the Korea Heritage Agency and the Baekje World Heritage Center. The event features various performances and experiential programs across eight historic sites of the Baekje Historic Areas, allowing visitors to vividly experience the glorious history and culture of Baekje.
The Baekje Historic Areas World Heritage site represents the culture of the late Baekje period (475-660). It is a serial heritage consisting of Gongsanseong Fortress and Tomb of King Muryeong and Royal Tombs of Gongju from the "Ungjin Period," the Archaeological Site in Gwanbuk-ri and Busosanseong Fortress, Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Royal Tombs and Naseong City Wall of Buyeo from the "Sabi Period," and the Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri and Mireuksa Temple Site of Iksan from the "Late Sabi Period."
As Korea's 12th World Heritage site, the Baekje Historic Areas were inscribed on the World Heritage List at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Bonn, Germany, in July 2015.
These eight heritage sites prove that Baekje was the center of ancient East Asian exchanges connecting China, Baekje, and Japan through active interactions. The Baekje Historic Areas demonstrate how Baekje spread Buddhism and developed art and architectural techniques through these exchanges.
